Welcome to Omakau. Once a small farming town, Omakau is now a bustling village servicing the rail trail and surrounding rural community. Growth in the town took off after 1904 when the Government of the day decided to run the railway through the town and not through the neighbouring gold mining town of Ophir, which would have required the expense of a rail bridge over the Manuherikia River.

As a town, it’s well serviced with a pub, service station, cafe and takeaways, grocers and is home to New Zealand’s smallest department store, Lorimers.
